Junebaby
Back in June of 2024, I had a sudden burst of inspiration with song after song just spilling out of me. Never before or since have I felt anything like it. I literally would be in the middle of one song when another would just burst forth, begging to be written. Of all the songs I wrote between then and the end of 2024, I feel these are the best and most meaningful to me. I recorded them over the course of the year and named the collection "Junebaby".
Sunups & Sycamores
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
I had a dream last night and you were there
We sat upon the clouds and drank the air
We watched the world burning underneath our feet
So close yet too far to feel the heat
Sunups and sycamores and rainy nights
We're robbing bitterness and killing time
Well, love is like a river in a barren land
Flowing fast and slipping through my hands
Hey, hey, hey...
[Chorus]
What do we do when it all comes around to another sundown?
Two roads diverged in a wood
And I, with a sigh, didn't take either one
But you and I are a pair of cords in a deck full of swords
Two words diverged in a song
And I, with a sigh, didn't sing either one
[Verse 2]
I hear the wind whisper through the lonesome pines
Of promises and all the mess is mine
The dirt roads of Texas and the Georgia clay
Hold footprints of a love that couldn’t stay
If I could take the reins of the sun and ride
I'd turn the pages back on what has died
Yesterday a younger man said words he didn't understand
Today he's eating crow and drinking sand
Hey, hey, hey...
[Chorus]
What do we do when it all comes around to another sundown?
Two roads diverged in a wood
And I, with a sigh, didn't take either one
But you and I are a pair of cords in a deck full of swords
Two words diverged in a song
And I, with a sigh, didn't sing either one
[Bridge]
I watch it storm.
It feels just like a hurricane.
I hear your voice in every drop of rain.
You sing of broken strings
Openings, and pretty things
And ghosts of a chance and never leave
The Southern Cross
Is a signal in the sky tonight
I'm navigating out towards the light
And in a dream where anything
Is possible I wanna see
An end to afterwards and inbetween
Hey, hey, hey...
[Chorus]
What do we do when it all comes around to another sundown?
Two roads diverged in a wood
And I, with a sigh, didn't take either one
But you and I are a pair of cords in a deck full of swords
Two words diverged in a song

Tangled
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
It always starts out with a name
A little story in a frame
A summary, a resume
It always starts out with a name
[Verse 2]
We're slowly growing into friends
It's just a rumor, just a hint
The fire spreads but we pretend
We're just contented bein' friends
[Pre-Chorus]
You got me so sewn up
What else can I say?
I think I'm gonna throw up
My hands and say
[Chorus]
You got me in a tangle
Dancin’ in the rain
Caught between heaven and a hurricane
Meltin’ in the moonlight
Catchin' like a train
You got me in a tangle
So tangled I remain
[Verse 3]
My thoughts keep turnin' back to you
Like my heart's got an IOU
And now it's comin' overdue
My thoughts keep turnin' back to you
[Verse 4]
Don't keep me waitin' in the lurch
Just hangin' out here on a perch
A sinner sweatin' out in church
Don't keep me waitin' in the lurch
[Pre-Chorus]
You got me so sewn up
What else can I say?
I think I'm gonna throw up
My hands and say
[Chorus]
You got me in a tangle
Dancin’ in the rain
Caught between heaven and a hurricane
Meltin’ in the moonlight
Catchin' like a train
You got me in a tangle
So tangled I remain
[Bridge]
If it all turns out for nothin'
Nothin's better than never was
But if it all turns into somethin'
I'm better off because
[Chorus]
You got me in a tangle
Dancin’ in the rain
Caught between heaven and a hurricane
Meltin’ in the moonlight
Catchin' like a train
You got me in a tangle
I can't complain
[Chorus]
You got me in a tangle
Dancin’ in the rain
Caught between heaven and a hurricane
Meet me in the moonlight
Catchin' like a train
You got me in a tangle
So tangled I remain
[Tag]
Oh, whoa
Tangled I remain
It always starts out with a name
A little story in a frame
A summary, a resume
It always starts out with a name

The One That Got Away
Lyrics
[Verse]
Flippin' through these pages
Trippin' through time
You got that letter jacket
That twinklin' eye
And here it is
As it's ever been
A time that passes
Gone with the wind
[Verse 2]
Plantin' seeds on high ground
Friday night lights
All the talk of small towns
Is all a hand of sleight
I flew out of high school
Like a bat out of hell
To sing songs for barstools
And poison the well
[Chorus]
Many miles astray
It's quite a shock and
people talk and speculate
They wonder why you couldn't stay
But I hear the mountain say
"You can stay or leave but
You'll always be
The one that got away"
[Verse 3]
Life is confusin'
I follow this thread
And winning or losing
Find the other instead
Man, I get it
You're dying to recover
But it's in the shadow of doubt
We discover
[Chorus]
Many miles astray
It's quite a shock and
people talk and speculate
They wonder why you couldn't stay
But I hear the mountain say
"You can stay or leave but
You'll always be
The one that got away"
[Bridge]
A piece of me stays behind
(So far afield)
A piece of you in my mind
(The future sealed)
The night is long and unkind
(The stakes are real)
And you can never rewind
[Instrumental]
[Chorus]
Many miles astray
It's quite a shock and

They wonder why you couldn't stay
But I hear the mountain say

Lesson Learned
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Play with fire and you'll get burned
Fly too high and you'll learn
Take that knife, touch your skin
Bet you won't do that again
[Verse 2]
Chase that heart right off a bridge
You know better than this
Buy that line, get reeled in
Bet you won’t do that again
[Chorus]
Funny how at the end
I see the lesson learned
Figured out a thing or two
The wages that I earned
Listen to your scars
When they’re reading your mail
‘Cause time will always tell
That a lesson learned hard
Is a lesson learned well
[Verse 3]
Come on in, the water’s warm
Green as the day when you were born
Who’s in love? And who’s a friend?
Bet you won’t do that again
[Verse 4]
Shoot for the stars and hit the moon
Sing a song to the wrong the tune
Go right back to where you been
Bet you won’t do that again
[Chorus]
Funny how at the end
I see the lesson learned
Figured out a thing or two
The wages that I earned
Listen to your scars
When they’re reading your mail
‘Cause time will always tell
That a lesson learned hard
Is a lesson learned well
[Interlude]
[Chorus]
Funny how at the end
With all the bridges burned
I figure out the pattern here
As a page turns…
Listen to your scars
When they’re reading your mail
‘Cause time will always tell
That a lesson learned hard...
Yeah!
[Interlude]
[Half Chorus]
A lesson learned hard
Is a lesson learned well
And time will always tell
That a lesson learned hard
Is a lesson learned…
…well
Play with fire and you'll get burned
Fly too high and you'll learn
Take that knife, touch your skin
Bet you won't do that again
[Verse 2]
Chase that heart right off a bridge
You know better than this

Twilight Eyes
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Don’t delay
Don’t wait another day
To meet me in the twilight heading west
I will wait
And wait however long it takes
To see you in that weddin' dress
[Verse 2]
Talk to me
And tell me all about your life
Your favorite cereal and such
Just let it be
Let go the hold of midnight
Forget it ever mattered much
[Chorus]
Every time I look at you
You got me falling in love
All I want is in those eyes
I can’t quite name the color of
Baby, give me one more night
Just let me hold on to you tight
Where I belong before you’re gone
[Verse 3]
People say
Love will come and love will go
They’re countin' cards and hedging bets
Real love
It changes you forever
And baby, I can’t give you any less
[Chorus]
Every time I look at you
You got me falling in love
All I want is in those eyes
I can’t quite name the color of
Baby, give me one more night
Just let me hold on to you tight
Where I belong before you’re gone
[Bridge]
I keep on falling in love
You got me falling in love
Let’s keep on falling in love
[Chorus]
Every time I look at you
You got me falling in love
All I want is in those eyes
I can’t quite name the color of
Baby, give me one more night
Just let me hold on to you tight
Where I belong before you’re gone

Hits & Mrs.
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
I hit a bullseye in the seventh grade
And hung it up in our garage
And I missed on my first deer the same year
Just couldn't hide in camouflage
Quarterback threw a pick six, we lost state
But I caught the flack for years
I just try too hard, too much, too often
Got a real super pow’r to make it weird
[Pre-Chorus]
Just a guy with a guitar strummin’
Just a song played along for hummin’
Just a hope, a sigh, a laugh, a last goodbye
[Chorus]
But it takes one
One small step to leave the past
One slow dance to make it last
One spark, one chance, one kiss
And when we've won
We'll run from the chapel door
We'll leave all the time before
One heart, one pair, one bliss
In a losing streak of swings and wishes
It takes a lot of hits to get your Mrs.
[Verse 2]
Flew transatlantic on a paper plane
Cupid's arrow took the backroads
Picked a fight with fate and fought in vain
And it's too late to let go
But it's not a Red Sea you walk across
It's more like a rickety bridge
Each step feels shaky, a gamble, a maybe
But the gettin' gets you over that ridge
[Pre-Chorus]
Just a guy with a guitar singin'
Just a ring for a finger swingin’
Just a hope, a sigh, a laugh, a last goodbye
[Chorus]
But it takes one
One small step to leave the past
One slow dance to make it last
One spark, one chance, one kiss
And when we've won
We'll run from the chapel door
We'll leave all the time before
One heart, one pair, one bliss
In a losing streak of swings and wishes
It takes a lot of hits to get your Mrs.
[Instrumental]
[Breakdown]
[Chorus]
Oh it takes one
One more chance to tip the score
One desperate throw from half-court
One look, one smile, one risk
And when we've won
We'll run to the hitchin’ spot
You get all the love I got
One heart, one pair, one bliss
In a losing streak of swings and wishes
It takes a lot of hits to see what this is

Let Your Colors Run
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
You're callin' from our room in Lexington
I couldn't make the wedding in time
You say that friends and family send their love
I'd be there but I'm too far behind
To catch a plane
But just the same
I need to ask you...
[Verse 2]
You ever feel I've kept you out of place?
I pulled you from the depths of the sea
And watched your luminescence fade to grey
As you stuttered and struggled to breathe
Because of me
Because you see
I need to tell you...
[Chorus]
You're red as writing on the wall
You're orange as summer turned to fall
You're yellow as a Texas rose
You're greener than a growin' thing
You're blue as bonnets in the spring
You're violet as the quiet close
It breaks my heart, but I suppose
That sometimes love means lettin' go
You're free to chase the rising sun
So go on, let your colors run
[Verse 3]
You're lookin' out the window at the rain
Thinkin' all your deep and secret thoughts
I look behind your eyes and see the pain
Of livin' in a life that's just not
A home to you
I know it's true
I need to show you...
[Chorus]
You're red as writing on the wall
You're orange as summer turned to fall
You're yellow as a Texas rose
You're greener than a growin' thing
You're blue as bonnets in the spring
You're violet as the quiet close
It breaks my heart, but I suppose
That sometimes love means lettin' go
You're free to chase the rising sun
So go on, let your colors run
[Bridge]
Love isn't love when it's a cage
Hope doesn't hold when it's a chain
And I guess faith means lookin' past what you know
And knowin' that whatever will be will be so
[Verse 4]
You left a simple letter in your seat
When I dropped you off at LAX
In pencil lead, you said "don't forget me"
As you flew into wherever comes next
[Pre-Chorus]
It's been a while
And many miles
But I can see
[Chorus]
You're red as writing on the wall
You're orange as summer turned to fall
You're yellow as a Texas rose
You're greener than a growin' thing
You're blue as bonnets in the spring
You're violet as the quiet close
It breaks my heart, but I suppose
That sometimes love means lettin' go

The Last Buffalo
Lyrics
[Verse]
I'm like a landline in a 5G town
My smile is a sunrise upside down
A rusty tin man and the oil’s run out
Lions and tigers and bears oh my
[Verse 2]
Time is a loan I'll eventually pay
When the walls fall where my records hang
Another martyr of the Empire Age
Yeah, my cup runneth over and I
[Pre-Chorus]
I keep on keepin’ on
On and on and on
[Chorus]
I stay alive on a dime
How long must I hunger?
All good things in their time
How long must I fight?
Here I am again livin’ in the dim within
Swimmin’ in a mist, all I wanna know is this:
How long must I hunger
For life
[Verse 3]
I hear a voice and I’m singin’ along
Fire in my heart but a babe in arms
Maps are useless when the signs are all wrong
Just follow the yellow brick road
[Pre-Chorus]
I keep on keepin’ on
On and on and on
[Chorus]
I stay alive on a dime
How long must I hunger?
All good things in their time
How long must I fight?
Here I am again livin’ in the dim within
Swimmin’ in a mist, all I wanna know is this:
How long must I hunger…
[Bridge]
Oh, the ache of the wait
And the weight of the load
The pull of the promise
The stretch of the bow
I’m goin’ the way
Of the last buffalo
How long, how long, how long…
[Chorus]
I stay alive on a dime
How long must I hunger?
All good things in their time
How long must I fight?
Here I am again livin’ in the dim within
Swimmin’ in a mist, all I wanna know is this:

I'm like a landline in a 5G town
My smile is a sunrise upside down
A rusty tin man and the oil’s run out
Lions and tigers and bears oh my
[Verse 2]
Time is a loan I'll eventually pay
When the walls fall where my records hang
Another martyr of the Empire Age
Yeah, my cup runneth over and I
[Pre-Chorus]
I keep on keepin’ on

[Verse 3]
I hear a voice and I’m singin’ along
Fire in my heart but a babe in arms
Maps are useless when the signs are all wrong
Just follow the yellow brick road
[Pre-Chorus]
I keep on keepin’ on
On and on and on
[Chorus]

You've Had Your Silver Lining
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
There is a heaviness to the drive home;
a sense of looming doom to Sunday
The end of an era
With fresh and fearful days ahead
I keep my wide eyes looking forward
Fighting the wheel from pulling toward
sideways and sideways and backwards
To where her car's still parked
[Chorus]
A name isn't much to go by
You can't know a soul by seeing inside
You can't guess the whole of a world
Or bottle up the love of a girl
You can't catch the slow, steady beat
Or steal the fire of a heart's heady heat
You can't know what's hiding behind
Just from one long look in the eyes
[Verse 2]
I looked inside and I saw jealous
Folded arms and watched my failure...
Failure to get the timing right
Watching her with spider eyes
My legs were a loom on the wall
Spinning webs for a chance to fall
She buzzed my way for a time
drawn to a flame that might have been mine.
But only a brief spark...
[Chorus]
A name isn't much to go by
You can't know a soul by seeing inside
You can't guess the whole of a world
Or bottle up the love of a girl
You can't catch the slow, steady beat
Or steal the fire of a heart's heady heat
You can't know what's hiding behind
Just from one long look in the eyes
[Bridge]
"You've had your silver lining,"
the clouds say, as if they knew
"You've had your godsend."
I dread what I may be finding.
I fear it may be true
"You've had your happy end"
[Instrumental interlude]
[Chorus]
A name isn't much to go by
You can't know a soul by seeing inside
You can't guess the whole of a world
Or bottle up the love of a girl
You can't catch the slow, steady beat
Or steal the fire of a heart's heady heat

Just from one long look in the eyes
[Tag]
Just from one long, hard look in the eyes
[Ending]
The sight of her is failing
while we're broadcasting live
The core of me is ailing
The worst I can do is survive
There is a heaviness to the drive home;
a sense of looming doom to Sunday
The end of an era
With fresh and fearful days ahead

The Constant
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
I found the candlelight
I found the violin
I found your picture on my eyes again
You’re on my mind again
[Chorus]
And I want to see you
I want to see you
[Verse 2]
I heard your voice in the dark
I saw your eyes alight
I watched and waited for the first star
And made a wish on the nigh
[Chorus]
And I want to see you
I want to see you
Oh, I want to see you
I want to see you
[Bridge]
On a mountain
In the valley
In the shadow of a doubt
When the tide is rising high
And I know I’m gonna drown
In my august
In my autumn
In the gloaming of my youth
In the ordinary time
There’s a firm and constant truth
[Chorus]
I want to see you
I want to see you
Oh, I want to see you
I want to see you
I want to see you
I want to see you
Oh, I want to see you
I just want to see you
I found the candlelight
I found the violin
I found your picture on my eyes again
You’re on my mind again
[Chorus]
And I want to see you
I want to see you
[Verse 2]
I heard your voice in the dark
I saw your eyes alight
I watched and waited for the first star
And made a wish on the nigh
[Chorus]
And I want to see you
I want to see you
Oh, I want to see you
I want to see you
[Bridge]
On a mountain
In the valley
In the shadow of a doubt
When the tide is rising high
And I know I’m gonna drown
In my august
In my autumn
In the gloaming of my youth
In the ordinary time
There’s a firm and constant truth
[Chorus]
I want to see you
I want to see you
Oh, I want to see you
I want to see you
I want to see you
I want to see you
Oh, I want to see you
I just want to see you
It'll Grow
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Summer in the south is a heavy heat
It weighs you down to the soul
The air is thick and the locusts shriek
I may be eight, but I know
Daddy once said that the world was formed
From a monster torn to bits
The sky an eye, the fields an arm,
And our little town was the spit
[Verse 2]
I grew up quick and thick as chickweed
The southern wind in my sails
Blowin’ hard and out of reach
To a coffin fresh out of nails
[Chorus]
I've seen enough to know
That the runnin' starts off slow
The seed has yet to sow
But it'll grow
And it gathers with the crows
Rises like the dough
The thunder comes in low
But it'll grow
[Verse 3]
Careful what you put in the fertile ground
Be wary what you water
It’s not a bad seed, it’s a bad mound
That bears the sins of the father
A little web of lies tells a bigger truth
Catching breath like a cough
My crooked roots are on my boots
And I just can’t shake ‘em off
[Chorus]
I've seen enough to know
That the runnin' starts off slow
The seed has yet to sow
But it'll grow
And it gathers with the crows
Rises like the dough
The thunder comes in low
But it'll grow
[Bridge]
The older I get
The more I see
It’s an all-out war on entropy
Building on a curse
Running from the hearse
Is a sucker’s game that no one beats
Like flames find their glow
Like melt on the snow
Like an arrow fired from a bow
…it’ll grow
[Chorus]
I've seen enough to know
That the runnin' starts off slow
The seed has yet to sow
But it'll grow
And it gathers with the crows
Rises like the dough
The thunder comes in low
But it'll grow
[Outro]
It’ll grow
(Like flames find their glow)
It’ll grow
(Like melt on the snow)
It’ll grow
(Like an arrow from a bow)
It’ll grow
Oh, it’ll grow

Love First
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Whatever they say
Whatever you see
People are people
So you'd better believe
They'll show you their best
They'll give you their worst
But whatever happens...
[Chorus]
Love first
Love always
Love anyway
Love like you want to be loved
[Verse 2]
We've all made mistakes
It's hardly unique
We're quick to strike back
When we're struck on the cheek
Go more than a mile
And bless when you're cursed
You want to be different?
[Chorus]
Love first
Love always
Love anyway
Love like you want to be loved
Love first
Love always
Love anyway
Love like you want to be loved
[Bridge]
If you only love the people who love you
What good is it?
What good is it?
If you only help the people who help you
What good are you?
What good are you?
[Chorus]
Love first
Love always
Love anyway
Love like you want to be loved
Love first
Love always
Love anyway
Love like you want to be loved
Whatever they say
Whatever you see
People are people
So you'd better believe
They'll show you their best
They'll give you their worst
But whatever happens...

A Place in My Heart
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
I love Waco
And San Antonio
I love Corpus Cristi over on the coast
But of all the Texas cities
I’ve ever been a part
There's one I know that stands alone
As a place in my heart
[Chorus]
And it's here
Right here
Right now
Some are dying to get out
But I fear
It's clear
I can't leave
I'm beginning to believe
That it's true what they say
Where you go, there you are
And Odessa, Texas
You're a place in my heart
[Verse 2]
Oh, I love New York
And I love LA
I'm fond of every city in the San Francisco Bay
But of all the US cities
Where I’ve disembarked
There's one I'll name with a claim to fame
As a place in my heart
[Chorus]
And it's here
Right here
Right now
Some are dying to get out
But I fear
It's clear
I can't leave
I'm beginning to believe
That it's true what they say
Where you go, there you are
And Oklahoma City
You're a place in my heart
[Verse 3]
I’ve never been to Paris
Or flown to Budapest
São Paulo and Tokyo are on my bucket list
I could go to Rome, see the catacombs,
The culture, and the art
But nothin’ in the world compares
To the place in my heart
[Chorus]
And it's here
Right here
Right now
Some are dying to get out
But I fear
It's clear
I can't leave
I'm beginning to believe
That it's true what they say
Where you go, there you are
And Buenos Aires
You're a place in my heart
[Verse 4]
From the top of Colorado
To the Florida Everglades
From the coast of California to the fields Iowa
There's a one and only treasure
Each city can impart
When you begin to let it in
to a place in your heart
[Chorus]
'Cause it's here
Right here
Right now
Some are dying to get out
But I fear
It's clear
I can't leave
I'm beginning to believe
That it's true what they say
Where you go, there you are
And Gatesville, Texas
You're a place in my heart

King of the World
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Glory to God! Forever He stands
King of the Heavens, the great I am
Maker of earth and the maker of man
Praise to the King of the World
[Verse 2]
Light out of darkness, firmament formed
Earth from the waters, galaxies born
All living creatures, mankind from the loam
Praise to the King of the World
[Chorus]
From glory to glory, our God stands alone
What power, what mercy our maker has shown
From story to story, creator enthroned
Praise to the King of the World
[Verse 3]
Music and beauty, touch, smell, and taste
Gifts from the heart of the Ancient of Days
Etched in creation, signed like a name
Praise to the King of the World
[Chorus]
From glory to glory, our God stands alone
What power, what mercy our maker has shown
From story to story, creator enthroned
Praise to the King of the World
[Bridge]
So what song could I sing?
What else could I bring
But the cry of my heart
The art of my part in this praise
Oh, what song could I sing?
What else could I bring
But the cry of my heart
The art of my part in this praise
[Chorus]
From glory to glory, our God stands alone
What power, what mercy our maker has shown
From story to story, creator enthroned

What Kind of a God Are You?
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
I come from a land where the idols stand
A place where the gods and kings
Can put your life on the edge of a knife
And I hear you call to me
You speak from the cloud and tell me about
A land that you'll lead me to
A blessing to pass but I have to ask
What kind of a God are you?
[Chorus 1]
Are you the fire that burns?
Or the sky that turns
The stars in their courses?
Are you a god of war?
Or of seas and shores?
A god of unseen forces?
I don't mean to sound uncertain
What you say, I trust you'll do
But as feet meet path, I just have to ask...
What kind of a God are you?
[Verse 2]
I've seen people bow and utter their vows
Praying for vict'ry or rain
But the stone is deaf and an idol's bereft
Of any power to save
You're a God unlike any Canaanite
Could conceive in their purview
So I'll just be blunt as we covenant
What kind of a God are you?
[Chorus 2]
Do you grow up the fields,
Make the fruit trees yield
Bounty in their season?
And what ritual
Is acceptable?
What worship stands to reason?
I don't mean to sound ungrateful
Is it too good to be true?
What should I submit in return for this?
What kind of a God are you?
[Interlude]
[Bridge]
The gods of my fathers
They ask for the fire
They ask for the children
To quench their desire
But that isn’t you, no
The blood of the lamb
Is given to cover
The penitent man
I'll follow in wonder
Both thrilled and confused
I'm sure that you'll show me...
What kind of a God are you?
[Chorus]
Are you a righteous judge?
Do you hold a grudge
And pour out wrath like water?
Will you bend the knees
Of my enemies?
Or deal with them as a Father?
My heart is full of questions
In time, I know you'll prove
To those like me who dare to believe
What kind of a God are you
I come from a land where the idols stand
A place where the gods and kings
Can put your life on the edge of a knife
And I hear you call to me

Days Without a King
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Hope can be an ambush
Mirrors and smoke
A light that bends to lure you in
And dims when you need it most
[Verse 2]
Faith can be a burden
A mark you can’t hit
A righteous law revealing flaws
And truth you can’t admit
[Pre-Chorus]
Just try a little harder
Just reach a little farther
Do what it takes to fake
Your own kind of Heaven
[Chorus]
In these days without a king
Oh we do whatever seems
Right in our own eyes
Right in our own eyes
And if we’re being honest
A promise is only a promise
Just a shadow, just a dream
In these days without a king
[Verse 3]
Love can be a weapon
A ransom note
The ties that bind until you find
There’s a knife at your throat
[Verse 4]
Peace can be deceiving
A fleeting calm
The fight has stopped but the right is not
Any further from wrong
[Pre-Chorus]
Just try a little harder
Just reach a little farther
Do what it takes to fake
Your own kind of Heaven
[Chorus]
In these days without a king
Oh we do whatever seems
Right in our own eyes
Right in our own eyes
And if we’re being honest
A promise is only a promise
Just a shadow, just a dream
In these days without a king
[Interlude]
[Bridge]
Oh the truth of it is
We want a counterfeit
We want a king who asks nothing
Of thieves and hypocrites
Our hopes and fields are fallow
We're drowning in the shallow
We spiral down the empty crown
[Chorus]
In these days without a king
Oh we do whatever seems
Right in our own eyes
Right in our own eyes
And if we’re being honest
A promise is only a promise
Just a shadow, just a dream
In these days
In these days…
[Tag]
And if we’re being honest
A promise is only a promise
Just a shadow, just a dream
In these days
In these days without a king
Hope can be an ambush
Mirrors and smoke
A light that bends to lure you in
And dims when you need it most
[Verse 2]
Faith can be a burden
A mark you can’t hit
A righteous law revealing flaws
And truth you can’t admit
[Pre-Chorus]
Just try a little harder
Just reach a little farther
Do what it takes to fake
Your own kind of Heaven
[Chorus]
In these days without a king
Oh we do whatever seems
Right in our own eyes
Right in our own eyes
And if we’re being honest
A promise is only a promise
Just a shadow, just a dream
In these days without a king
[Verse 3]
Love can be a weapon
A ransom note
The ties that bind until you find
There’s a knife at your throat
[Verse 4]
Peace can be deceiving
A fleeting calm
The fight has stopped but the right is not
Any further from wrong
[Pre-Chorus]
Just try a little harder
Just reach a little farther
Do what it takes to fake
Your own kind of Heaven
[Chorus]
In these days without a king
Oh we do whatever seems
Right in our own eyes
Right in our own eyes
And if we’re being honest
A promise is only a promise
Just a shadow, just a dream
In these days without a king
[Interlude]
[Bridge]
Oh the truth of it is
We want a counterfeit
We want a king who asks nothing
Of thieves and hypocrites
Our hopes and fields are fallow
We're drowning in the shallow
We spiral down the empty crown
[Chorus]
In these days without a king
Oh we do whatever seems
Right in our own eyes
Right in our own eyes
And if we’re being honest
A promise is only a promise
Just a shadow, just a dream
In these days
In these days…
[Tag]
And if we’re being honest
A promise is only a promise
Just a shadow, just a dream
In these days
In these days without a king
What Prophets Longed to See
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Hear oh people gathered
Listen and believe
A tale foretold from days of old
What prophets longed to see
[Verse 2]
Born in lowly manger
Behold the mystery
The Word of God upon this sod
What prophets longed to see
[Pre-Chorus]
Mystics, shepherds, refugees
Come behold the King
[Chorus]
Glory to God in the highest
Peace on earth below
Those on whom his favor rests
May see this child and know
The high priest and the sacrifice
The servant and the king
The shepherd lamb, both God and man
What prophets longed to see
[Verse 3]
God from the beginning
God of Adam, God of Eve
Of David, Moses Abraham
Whom prophets longed to see
[Verse 4]
The light shines in the darkness
To all who would receive
Oh, fear and doubt can't put out
What prophets longed to see
[Pre-Chorus - Build]
Lepers, sinners, Pharisees
Come behold the King
[Chorus]
Glory to God in the highest
Peace on earth below
Those on whom his favor rests
May see this child and know
The high priest and the sacrifice
The servant and the king
The shepherd lamb, both God and man
What prophets longed to see
[Bridge]
Gather with the saints
Gather with the angels
Gather in this place
Bow before a manger (repeat)
[Verse 5]
Covenant unfolding
The hope of centuries
The God who heals in flesh reveals
What prophets longed to see
[Pre-Chorus]
Widow, orphan, royalty
Come behold the King
[Chorus]
Glory to God in the highest
Peace on earth below
Those on whom his favor rests
May see this child and know
The high priest and the sacrifice
The servant and the king
The shepherd lamb, both God and man
